What
do we offer to others in this Outreach?
In
Hospice Outreach we offer a contemplative, healing presence to the elderly, the
sick and the dying.
What
is this presence?
Healing
presence is the condition of being consciously and compassionately in the
present moment with another, believing in and affirming their potential for
wholeness, wherever they are in life.
What
does this entail?
As
this definition implies, healing presence doesn't entail much activity.
As we offer a compassionate presence at a bedside, we can make a major
difference in people's lives as it's taking place, even though
it may appear that very little is happening.
Who would want to be a part of this Outreach?
While
healing presence is a powerful gift, you don't have to be expertly trained or
well educated to companion another in this way. In Fr. Keating's own words, "I
heartily encourage such work for the end of life patients. They don't need
a lot of information or explanation, just someone to lead them into the silence
of trust and love." The
